Kevin’s Wintertime Hobbies
Forty-five horses at the Circle L Ranch still wander along the fence line, hanging their heads over, noses flared looking and sniffing for some sign of their next meal. Well…Kevin’s the guy! Each day he grabs two teams of horses and brings them into the barn. He harnesses them, hooks them to the sleigh, loads hay on the sleigh and begins his daily feeding chore. If you ask Kevin if he likes to feed he’d tell you it was just something he has to do everyday. If you would ask Debbie if Kevin likes to feed, she would have to be honest and say that driving and breaking new driving horses is his hobby; one he loves very much but just won’t admit it. He has considered owning a heavy pulling team and competing but it never seems to work out for us. Maybe someday but for now he is driving his 2 steady teams and breaking colts.
A year ago it was super cold. We had a big barn party with lots of food and friends and family. It was our anniversary and my sister’s 50th birthday. The date – January 1, 2011. Susan a good friend was kind enough to take a few pictures of that evening. I especially liked the ones of the horses because of how frosty they looked.
Another hobby of Kevin’s during these long Teton winters is to snow shoe. We had family visit during the Christmas holiday so we all took the horses out across the east fields from our barn and had a fun day. Kevin explores all over the Swanner Creek foothills and has made some pretty interesting discoveries. I’ll talk about those in another blog. Enjoy these pics!
Thanks for reading our blog. We’ll be back next time with some of Deb’s favorite winter activities.
